Key Timelines in Disaster Recovery

Two important concepts in disaster recovery that are crucial for tailoring a disaster recovery plan to your business needs and capabilities within AWS are RTO and RPO. RTO (Recovery Time Objective)

RPO (Recovery Point Objective)

This specifies the oldest backups that can be used to restore operations after a disaster, essentially defining how much data loss is acceptable. For example, an RPO of 30 minutes means backups must be at most 30 minutes old.

  4. Choosing the Right Region: Select regions with lower storage costs while ensuring compliance with data sovereignty laws. This strategy helps in managing RTO and RPO by storing data cost-effectively in strategically appropriate locations.

Best Practices for Disaster Recovery on AWS

  • Regularly test your DR plan to ensure it meets the required recovery times (RTO) and data recovery points (RPO) your business mandates, at least annually.
  • Leverage AWS’s global infrastructure to position your DR site strategically for cost-effectiveness and swift accessibility, aligning with your RTO needs.
