Summary

Neurotek is on a journey to modernize its global Cognitive Performance and ADHD Assessment platform (MOXO), moving away from a legacy, manually managed infrastructure toward a scalable, automated, and cost-efficient cloud environment. This project is driven by three core goals: significantly reducing infrastructure costs and operational overhead, streamlining maintenance across multiple environments, and establishing a regulatory-compliant presence in the United States to meet strict data sovereignty requirements. Together, these efforts are expected to unlock new enterprise opportunities and position MOXO for continued global growth.

Goal

Neurotek aimed to modernize its entire cloud infrastructure to align with AWS Best Practices and establish strict alignment across all environments.
The primary objective was to transition from an outdated, complex configuration to a lean setup that minimizes operational overhead and maintenance. Additionally, Neurotek sought to expand its geographic footprint by deploying an isolated, regulatory-compliant environment in the United States to fulfill local data sovereignty laws and unblock new enterprise sales.

Challenges

  • Architectural Complexity: Managing an over-provisioned setup where individual microservices used dedicated, separate Load Balancers instead of shared, environment-wide routing.
  • Outdated Infrastructure Management: Relying on manual configuration processes without version-controlled Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Compliance Barriers: Facing blocks from potential US clients because all global traffic and sensitive ADHD data were routed to and stored exclusively within European production servers.
  • Resource Constraints: Executing a complex cloud migration seamlessly while accommodating the capacity and pace of a lean internal engineering team.

Solution

The modernization strategy completely overhauled Neurotek’s environments, replacing legacy infrastructure with clean, standardized deployment models. To address the load balancer sprawl, the architecture was re-engineered around a consolidated “One Load Balancer per Environment” model, utilizing smart host and domain-based routing rules to direct traffic to specific microservices.

The entire stack was rewritten into modular Terraform code, introducing true Infrastructure as Code to the organization. To ensure long-term sustainability, the engineering team participated in dedicated hands-on Terraform enablement sessions, ensuring they were deeply integrated into the process and fully equipped to manage the code moving forward.

To overcome regulatory compliance hurdles in the North American market, a brand-new, isolated environment infrastructure was designed for the us-east-1 region. This ensures that sensitive medical and attention-profiling data for US patients remains strictly within US borders, allowing Neurotek to successfully pass rigorous compliance audits and sign major corporate clients. The migration is being executed using a phased approach tailored to the team’s capacity – successfully launching and testing in the Alpha environment before rolling out to Stage and Production.

Technical Execution

The new, resilient architecture utilizes Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service) to run containerized, serverless workloads, eliminating the operational burden of managing traditional virtual servers. Data management is powered by Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) for reliable,
high-performance database workloads, while application secrets and credentials are systematically secured using AWS Secrets Manager. Traffic distribution is managed dynamically via optimized Application Load Balancers (ALB) configured with host-based routing. The entire global infrastructure is modeled, versioned, and provisioned using Terraform, ensuring rapid, repeatable deployments across the Alpha, Stage, and Production environments in both European and US regions (us-east-1).

Results

Massive Cost Optimization: Significantly reduced the Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) footprint by consolidating dozens of active load balancers
down to just a handful — delivering meaningful monthly savings on routing alone. Combined with the ongoing shift from fixed EC2 instances to
serverless ECS compute models, Neurotek is projected to achieve cost reductions of up to several tens of thousands of dollars annually once all
changes are fully implemented.

Team Upskilling: Successfully bridged the internal knowledge gap, transitioning the development team to an agile DevOps mindset through
hands-on Infrastructure-as-Code training.

Streamlined Maintenance: Transformed an opaque infrastructure into an organized, easily managed environment that dramatically reduces
troubleshooting and maintenance hours for developers.

Unlocked US Market Expansion: The addition of the US region successfully satisfied strict local regulatory audits, removing compliance
bottlenecks and enabling immediate business growth in North America.

Moving Forward

Moving forward, Neurotek will finalize the phased migration by promoting the remaining staging and production workloads into the modernized Terraform
structure. The team will also focus on fully deploying and scaling operations within the newly established US region to capture expanding market demand. Long-term initiatives will ensure maximum platform resilience and continuous cost optimization by integrating advanced automated monitoring modules, implementing proactive error-handling workflows, and expanding the Terraform framework to dynamically support their growing global infrastructure.
